Welcome to "Captain's Corner" which is a periodic production created by Captain Charlie Breen. "Captain's Corner" will take a look back into the history of the Somerville Fire Department and spotlight the fires and the firefighters who fought them.
Photo #1 is a shot of a Second Alarm at 62 Hinckley Street on the morning of December 9, 1990. Group 1 had the fire which started in a second floor bedroom and took off from there. A dropped cigarette onto a foam bed pillow got this one going. Companies were fortunate that the exposure on the right was some distance. That neighborhood is otherwise one of the most congested in the city. Deputy Chief Bob Gover is in the foreground directing operations. (Photo by Charlie Breen)
Photo # 2 shows Lt. Dan Matthews stretching a line during a Second Alarm at 194 Cedar Street on July 8, 1993. A child playing with matches got this one going. Heavy fire conditions damaged a total of four exposures. Once again, companies were fortunate to have some distance between exposures on the right side which is rarely the case. Group 3 had this one. Lt. Jack McKenzie sizes up conditions during a Working Fire at 56R Webster Avenue on the night of May 27, 1992. Several exploding acetylene tanks kept things interesting. Group 3 had this one which destroyed a one story metalclad building. The fire was believed to be arson. (Todd Breen photo)
